CS-E: Data digitalization for environmental impact assessments using LCA

Conducting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to assess environmental impacts of livestock supply chains is challenging because of the scarcity of on-farm data. These data are often incomplete and of varying quality.

Addressing this challenge involves the digitalization of essential on-farm data required for environmental LCAs of livestock products. This is achieved through web-based templates designed to streamline data collection for LCA. Digi4Live will integrate sensor data and farm management information, such as feed production and supply, productivity metrics, geospatial data, and soil data. A prototype software will be developed to demonstrate the amalgamation of digital data sources into the life cycle inventory and subsequently to feed the LCA with data from pig and poultry supply chains.

This case study will enable digital data acquisition and management across various segments of the supply chain, with particular emphasis on feed and animal farming. This enables a smoother process of carrying out comprehensive environmental LCAs, ultimately enhancing the overall environmental sustainability of livestock production systems.

The digital solution developed is highly adaptable and can be extended beyond poultry and pig supply chains. This scalability and versatility make it a viable approach for enhancing sustainability assessments across agricultural sectors.
